अगस्त 2018 से दिसंबर 2020 तक एकत्र किए गए 764 नदियों के नमूनों में 688 नदियों में भारी धातु की उच्च मात्रा है.
भारत में नदियों की गुणवत्ता निगरानी करने वाले दो-तिहाई स्टेशन ऐसे हैं जहां नदी जल के नमूनों में लेड, आयरन, निकेल, कैडमियम, आर्सेनिक, क्रोमियम और कॉपर जैसे भारी धातु मिले हैं. जबकि 117 नदियों और सहायक नदियों के गुणवत्ता की निगरानी करने वाले एक-चौथाई स्टेशनों की जांच में जल नमूनों में दो या उससे अधिक जहरीले धातुओं की उपस्थिति है. गंगा के 33 निगरानी स्टेशनों में 10 स्टेशन ऐसे हैं जहां लेड, आयरन, निकेल, कैडमियम और आर्सेनिक की उच्च मात्रा मिली है. अगस्त, 2018 से दिसंबर, 2020 तक एकत्र किए गए 764 नदियों के नमूनों में 688 नदियों में भारी धातु की उच्च मात्रा है.
